County Library
Mission: The mission of the Custer County Library is to feature classic and current, high-demand materials in a variety of formats for persons of all ages and abilities; to support individuals pursuing a sustained program of independent learning; and to encourage children to develop an interest in reading.
Statement of Purpose: The Custer County Library shall exist to provide citizens of Custer County with information and knowledge by selecting, purchasing, organizing and maintaining books, periodicals, and any other materials deemed usable for this purpose.
Materials in the library shall be available for loan to all persons show have established residency or who won property in the county, regardless of age, sex, income level, racial origin, creed or political affiliation. Materials may also be loaned to non-residents, but a user fee must be paid. Amounts will be determined annually by library board. The library shall attempt to serve those unable to physically enter the building, based on available volunteers and funds.
The library shall provide materials to assist in the informal education of its patrons so that they will become more informed and intelligent citizens. When formal education programs exist, the library shall support them but not attempt to duplicate services provided by the school district. In this respect, it shall serve as a secondary source for students.
The library shall be supportive of the cultural and spiritual needs of the community. It shall be kept in mind the diverse origins and needs of peoples of the area. The library shall be a means by which all people shall have access to diverse selections of materials.
The library shall supply materials for recreational needs and constructive use of leisure time. Because school libraries are closed for the summer months, the library realizes its responsibilities to students to supply materials for their use during this time. The library will also encourage students' continued reading during the months by providing a summer reading program as incentive. During the school year, a story hour for three to five-year-olds will be held to foster preschoolers' first love of reading.
