| Custer County Frequently Asked Questions Q: A:
Q: A: Q: A: Q: Hermosa Library A: To better serve the eastern side of Custer County, a second library was recently opened in Hermosa in November of 2005. Roberta Upton, Lilah Pengra, and Lori James work together to keep the Hermosa Library open 20 hours a week. Besides having over 3,600 books, they too have 2 high-speed DSL computers, wireless capability, audio books, CD’s and videos. The library is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:30 until 6:30 p.m. and is located at 234 Main St. Q: What does it cost to get a library card? A: Library cards are free-of-charge to county residents and a great value for your tax dollars. We need one type of proof of county residence such as a cancelled utility bill, rental agreement, post office box receipt, or top of a check blank. If you are not a county resident and would like a library card, the annual cost is $25.00 with $15.00 refundable with notification when you leave. For every $1,000 of taxes placed in the General Fund, 13˝ ˘ goes to support the library. “Knowledge is free at the library. Just bring your own container.” Q: How many books (CD’s, DVD’s, videos….) do you have? A: The Library has grown to over 21,000 books and added the diversity of more than 1,000 audio books and 1,200 CD’s and videos. If the library does not own a title you need, we are able to borrow it from a neighboring library. We loan out over 43,000 books annually and average 78 persons visiting the library everyday, 6 days a week. Of the 7,275 residents of Custer County, 69% now have current library cards. The library now has 5 high-speed DSL computers the public can use in ˝ hour increments and 1 computer designated for genealogy research and reference. Over 4,600 people used our computer internet system this past year and now we have added wireless capability for those who have laptops. Q: Do you have any additional educational assistance? A: In support of lifelong learning, the library also proctors college tests for those seeking higher-education and coordinates tutors for students requiring additional help. We also assist with basic education and a GED program. All South Dakotans also now have free access to a large variety of databases available through the State Library. The selection includes practice tests, South Dakota newspapers, magazines, genealogy, maps, health and business journals and much more. Ask at the library how you can make them available on your own home computer.
