NOTICE TO PRAIRIE DOG APPLICATORS: Licensing requirements for fumigation by private and commercial applicators have been revised by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. As of February 1, 2025, you are now required to be certified in “Non-soil Fumigation pest control” to either purchase or use fumigants. Contact your local testing center to obtain the certification.
Making Prairie Dog Complaints:

When Prairie dogs are encroaching onto private land from public land:

a request for the SD Game & Fish Department to treat the problem can be filed here on the Prairie Dog Control form. Please check eligibility requirements.

Deadline to submit request is August 15. To be eligible, the prairie dog colony 1) must have encroached onto private land from adjacent public land (excluding tribal and municipality properties), 2) must be within one (1) mile of public land boundary, and 3) must have a minimum of 10 acres of contiguous prairie dog colonies.

NOTE: Before the County Weed & Pest Board can take action, prairie dogs must be “… colonizing on lands where the prairie dogs are unwanted by the owner of the impacted land” (SDCL 38-22-1.2).

Send written complaint to SD Dept. of Agriculture and Natural Resources (address on linked form above). The State will provide a copy of the complaint to the County Weed & Pest Board.

A copy of the complaint must also be sent by you to the landowner you are filing a complaint against.
